HHC Coney Island Hospital staff greeted more than 40 bicyclists from HHC Woodhull Hospital’s “Kids Ride Club” on August 14.

Riders began the 40-mile ride from Long Island City with a rest-stop at HHC Coney Island Hospital for lunch before continuing the ride back to HHC Woodhull Medical Center. Many of the riders were from north Brooklyn, ranging in age from 10-18 years old, and were accompanied by parents, teachers, and hospital staff.

“This program has been operating for 20 years. It promotes a healthy lifestyle for children and keeps them safe,” said Dr. Fishkin, Chief Medical Officer and Kids Ride Club founder of Woodhull Medical Center. “The kids get to meet healthcare professionals who participate in the tour and learn about careers in healthcare.”

The “Kids Ride Club” introduces area youth to cycling as a safe and effective means of transportation. Through this activity, they are encouraged to incorporate regular physical activity and good nutrition into their life styles.

“As healthcare professionals it is crucial that we mentor children about health and fitness so it leads to future adults living healthier lifestyles,” said Arthur Wagner, senior vice president of Southern Brooklyn and Staten Island Healthcare Network and executive director of HHC Coney Island Hospital.

“This is a great program that promotes fitness and well-being among young people that will help create lifelong healthy habits,” said Annamaria Azzue, associate executive director for the Department of Surgery at HHC Coney Island Hospital.
