Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in Gravesend and Coney Island helped to herald the holiday season this past week, bringing smiles of delight to children’s faces in the process.

Revelers flocked to Lady Moody Square in Gravesend last Thursday and Leon S. Kaiser Park in Coney Island on Saturday for some hot chocolate, caroling, and a chance to see Santa.

The Moody Square celebration was organized by Senator Marty Golden, who used the occasion to gather presents for his annual drive for the United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots Foundation.

From Brooklyn Daily:

“During the Christmas season, and all year, residents of our community should join together in the Christmas spirt (sic) and exhibit good will to serve the most needy,” Golden said.

The December 10, event at Leon S. Kaiser Park included an ambitious display of six trees, raffles and an appearance by Saint Nick for 75 neighborhood children. All of the young attendees left with a gift basket of toys, winter gear like hats, gloves and scarves , thanks to the park conservation group Friends of Kaiser Park.

“The kids appreciate it,” Rocco Brescia, the group’s president told Brooklyn Daily. “They’re so excited when they see Santa.”
