New Rides and Attractions Coming to Coney Island!

CONEY ISLAND – A brand new log flume, adventure ropes course and public plaza are coming to Coney Island!

The plans, which will transform the city-owned land between Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk next to the Thunderbolt ride, were announced yesterday by the  New York Economic Development Corporation (EDC).

Over 150,000 square feet of space will be added to the entertainment district, including a plaza with new open-air food options and an arcade. Central Amusement International (CAI) will undertake the project.

“Coney Island is both a cherished summertime destination and an important economic engine for South Brooklyn,” said James Patchett, President of NYC EDC. “With these exciting new attractions and our ongoing investments in housing and infrastructure, Coney Island’s future has never looked brighter.”

While the attraction renderings that were released are preliminary, and must be approved by the Public Design Commission, they give an idea of the types of attractions that will be added to the bustling boardwalk: a large-scale log flume ride and a ropes course that will provide views of the boardwalk and ocean.

The sketches also show new landscaping and “activated street ends” leading to the boardwalk, similar to the garden at the end of Stillwell Avenue.

“Recapturing the best of Coney Island’s past is a big part of the future at the People’s Playground,” said Councilmember Mark Treyger (D-47). “This continues the revitalization of the amusement district, offering exciting new activities and attractions for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.”

Recently, Treyger helped secure the landmarking of the historic Reigelmann Boardwalk, helping to preserve its iconic wood-slat construction.

The project is a collaboration between NYC EDC and the NY Parks Department.
