Comptroller Stringer Announces New Guide To LGBTQ Resources
In honor of Pride Month New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer has released his office’s 2015 issue of the “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer Guide of Services & Resources,” and an accompanying website.
The guide is a comprehensive resource including contact and background information for nearly 600 programs and non-profits serving the city’s LGBTQ community.
“New York City, home of the gay rights movement and one of the most LGBTQ-friendly communities in the world, deserves a Guide that can connect people to the services they need,” Comptroller Stringer said. “Our LGBTQ Guide helps residents and visitors alike better understand what resources are available, from hundreds of community organizations and health care facilities to counseling and support groups, recreational clubs, and much more. I am honored to provide this important information to all New Yorkers.”
Stringer said another purpose of the guide is to raise awareness of the existing challenges for the LGBTQ community by including related statistics. A recent survey found that 74 percent of transgender persons have experienced harassment on the job, and studies show that over 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. These facts emphasize the importance of having an accurate listing of services geared towards the LGBTQ community.
The guide includes many Park Slope organizations:
- OUTmedia, a queer cultural activist organization and performing arts center.
- Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, a congregation of people who choose to emphasize personal growth and social progress.
- Foundation for Integrative AIDS Research, a non-profit organization that sponsors clinical trials of herbal and nutritional treatments for people with HIV, AIDS, or chronic viral hepatitis.
- Center for Anti-Violence Education, an organization that develops and implements comprehensive violence prevention programs.
- Brooklyn Arts Exchange, a rehearsal and educational venue that encourages artistic risk-taking and stimulates dialogue among divers constituencies.
- Park Slope United Methodist Church, a Methodist congregation with open arms and expansive theology.
- Kolot Chayeinu/Voices of our Lives, a welcoming Jewish congregation.
- New York Memory Center, a freestanding, nonprofit, community-based agency providing services to adults with cognitive, physical, and emotional limitations to help them enjoy life beyond diagnosis of memory loss.
- St. John-St. Matthew-Emanuel Lutheran Church, a Reconciling in Christ Congregation, affirming gay and lesbian persons, and welcoming all to full participation in the life of their church.
