Fort Greene Park is no stranger to hosting fun times for kids and families, but usually people stick with friends, sports teams or other organized groups. But this Sunday, April 19 from 10am-4pm, in the park by the tennis courts, a group of local “educators and playworkers-in-training” will be hosting a community-wide pop-up play date for anyone and everyone to have fun together!

The Pop Up Adventure Play Day is a chance for “the kids to be in charge,” explains Eve Mosher of play:group, which organizes the events. “[We provide] materials and tools for kids to take charge and lead design, building and playing [and] taking ownership of the materials to craft their own world of play and imagination.”

Materials are donated by parents and educators, and include things like cardboard boxes, fabric, tape, string, markers and more. Families are encouraged to bring their own supplies, as well.

This is the group’s first Fort Greene play day after a successful pop-up in Brower Park in Crown Heights (right next to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum) this past December. The events are inspired by a British-based “field of playwork for schools, neighborhoods, museums, parks, and anywhere else that children can be found.”

According to the group’s website:

“Our mission is to support children’s play. . . Our belief is that children have the right to play as they please, and that a place that supports children’s play benefits everyone.
. . . An introductory version of the classic adventure playground model, they gently introduce themes of risk and freedom by welcoming people of all ages and abilities to play together.
