Commemorate The Battle Of Brooklyn At Green-Wood On August 24
The Green-Wood Historic Fund will commemorate the Battle of Brooklyn with a day of family-friendly events on Sunday, August 24. Fought on August 27, 1776 across Brooklyn, including land that is now Green-Wood Cemetery, it was the largest battle of the American Revolution, and the first to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Here’s what you can expect at this popular annual event, all of which is free except for the tour:
10am-12pm: Trolley tour of Green-Wood and Revolutionary War-related sites led by author and historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman. Sold out.
12:30-1:30pm: Living history programming with drills, weapons firing, games and historic personalities, featuring re-enactors from Continental Line regiments. 18th-century food and drink will be available for purchase at the Commissary. Re-enactors will demonstrate Revolutionary War weaponry.
1:30-2pm: Battle of Brooklyn Parade from Green-Wood’s Main Gate to Battle Hill led by The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Attendees are invited to pick up one of the 82 flags that are replicas of the actual flags used during the war and carry it to Battle Hill.
2-3pm: Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration Ceremony atop Battle Hill — the highest point in Brooklyn — with views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, and the Manhattan skyline.
