A temporary safety zone created around unexploded ordinance in the waters near the Verrazano Narrows Bridge has been made permanent by Coast Guard officials.
The 1,500 rounds of 20mm munitions, lost near the narrows in Gravesend Bay during a 1954 military accident but re-discovered by a diver last October, have not been removed as many speculated they would be.
From the UXO (unexploded ordinance) News Wire Service’s blog:
The rule which goes into effect on 30 June encompasses all waters of Gravesend Bay within 110-yard radius of position 40[deg]36’30” N, 074[deg]02’14” W (NAD 83), approximately 70-yards southeast of the Verrazano Bridge Brooklyn tower.
According to UXOinfo.com, the Safety Zone will not be legally accessible by boaters unless permission is granted by the Captain of the Port of New York.
