Cleaning Up After a Hurricane and Snow
Efforts to clean up Prospect Park continue. The Department of Sanitation is running teams around the clock in 12-hour shifts. So far, they have managed to clear 60,000 tons of debris.
Yesterday wasn’t the day to enjoy the fruits of that labor. As tempted as folks might have been to head over for a barbecue or game of flag football, the nor’easter inspired the City to shut down parks and beaches. Everything is scheduled to reopen today at noon. UPDATE, 12pm: Sadly, due to the storm, everything is still closed today, and will hopefully reopen on Friday morning.
City parks weren’t the only victim of our latest weather abnormality. Airports were thrown into chaos as flights were delayed, rerouted, and cancelled. Despite gas shortages, traffic was particularly nasty.
Things are getting back to normal, though. After more than a week, the G train is back in service, making it possible to get to Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Alternate side parking will be going back into effect on Saturday, November 10 (though it’s suspended on Monday and Tuesday for holidays). Gone are the hurricane-inspired heavy lunch crowds and long lines at the Coop. Most of the area seems to have gone back to work.
The snowstorm, which was supposed to leave a light dusting, has dumped a couple of inches on Park Slope. Residents have switched from shoveling leaves to shoveling snow. Take heart, though – the weather forecast promises a very nice weekend.
