City Plans To Reduce Flatbush Avenue Congestion By Removing Lanes Of Traffic

Last night was the DOT’s public info session about improvements proposed for the Flatbush Avenue Congested Corridor between Nostrand Avenue and Empire Boulevard. Here were some of the key points, via the Daily News:

  • Current travel lanes would be replaced with center portions for left turns to curb collisions caused by drivers trying to get around turning vehicles.
  • Curbside lanes would become designated commercial loading zones to reduce double-parking.
  • Bright pavement paint will be used to clearly mark designated lanes and avoid confusion of lanes’ respective uses.

At first, the idea of taking away viable travel lanes to reduce congestion sounds a bit counterintuitive, but we’re open to these ideas as long as people don’t just end up parking in loading zones and making delivery trucks double-park anyway. If you travel frequently on Flatbush, what’s your take on proposed changes?
