Children’s Mela This Saturday On McDonald Avenue
Making its McDonald Avenue debut, MUNA, the Muslim Ummah of North America, a faith-based, non-profit national organization, is kicking off the school year with a Children’s Fair this Saturday, September 6. Activities will be happening up and down McDonald, from Avenue C to Church Avenue, starting at 10am and wrapping up at 7pm.
Competitions figure prominently in the day’s events with plenty of prizes for the winners. In addition, there will be speeches by the convener, Professor Kazi Ismail; MUNA NY zone president Harun O. Rashid; and national vice-president Abul Faizullah.
Kensington’s own Mamnunal Haq, one of two Bangladeshi representatives to Community Board 12, will also speak, and Councilmember Brad Lander is tentatively scheduled to appear. The politicians should start talking around 11:30am, Professor Ismail said.
If it proceeds like past Kensington melas, expect plenty of food and terrific singing and drama, i.e., danced stories, by young performers during the cultural program, as in this photo from a May, 2013 mela.
