Chancellor Fariña Celebrates The Hour Of Code At Ditmas IS 62

Education Chancellor Carmen Fariña stopped by Ditmas IS 62 (700 Cortelyou Road) to talk to students about the importance of learning computer programming and how to code as part of the Hour of Code on Tuesday.

Hour of Code is a global movement to teach students how to code, specifically during the week of December 7-13, in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.

Students at IS 62 spent an hour on Tuesday learning about computer programming and coding. Chancellor Fariña talked to the students about the the importance of learning to code and the kinds of opportunities these skills can lead to later on.

“It was great to come here and to see students coding,” Fariña told the students. “Thanks to this school for taking the lead in the Hour of Code.”

One student told Fariña, “I like doing this after-school because it helps me learn about the future. I could be an engineer someday.”

Fred Wilson, a venture capitalist with Union Square Ventures, also spoke to the students. “Keep taking these classes, knowing how to do code is going to be very valuable,” said Wilson. “It’s exciting to see you learning it now. Enjoy it.”
