Autumn is in full swing at Compost for Brooklyn (Newkirk Avenue at E. 8th Street), which has a busy fall lineup of activities, including its Celebrate Urban Trees event on Sunday, October 19, from 1pm to 3pm.

Everyone is invited to the event, which is free (though donations are appreciated, as the group runs on volunteers) and will include a tree care workshop, composting activities for families and children, the chance to make a mini-book about trees, refreshments, and live music by Baharat – a local band that plays music influenced by Middle to Far Eastern cultures.

In other Compost for Brooklyn news, the group has extended its compost and garden hours – which means it’s also looking for more volunteers.

The garden will now be open:

  • Every Thursday, from 1-3:30pm (October) and 2pm-4pm (November & December)
  • Every second and fourth Saturday, from 11am-1pm (October 11 & 12, November 8 & 22, and December 13 & 27)
  • Every first and third Sunday, from 2-4pm (October 5, November 2 & 16, and December 7 and 21)

If you’d like to volunteer, please email Natalia, Compost for Brooklyn’s volunteer coordinator, at snucre@optonline.net.

And, last but not least, Compost for Brooklyn will also be holding a leaf collection event on Sunday, November 2, when you can bring your bagged leaves to be used at the garden.
