Tomorrow, August 1, marks the NYPD’s annual National Night Out event, where precincts throughout the city throw a massive block party to strengthen police-community relations.

The annual event, held in thousands of precincts nationwide, aims to build awareness about crime prevention and help neighbors get to know their local officers, including the commanding officer, patrol officers, neighborhood coordination officers, crime prevention and youth officers, plus community organizations, businesses, and politicians.

And because National Night Out is a family-friendly celebration, it turns into a massive block party with games, rides, live music, performances, food, police trucks, and tables featuring info about community organizations and safety. This year some parties include giant bouncy houses, ice cream, free food, petting zoos, and more!

“The community gets to see us in a human aspect and on a personal level to bridge the gap of communication between law enforcement and the community,” said Deputy Inspector James Palumbo at the 70th Precinct outing last summer.
