Celebrate Friendship In Urdu At Kensington Public Library Saturday

Come join your neighbors on Saturday for Dosti —  an Urdu cultural celebration of friendship!

The Kensington Library will host artists for an afternoon of Urdu music and culture, featuring Harmonium, Tabla and traditional Urdu songs on Saturday, March 26th, starting at 3pm. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan, and six states in India.

The Kensington Library is located at 4207 18th Avenue, between East 2nd and East 3rd Streets.

This weekend’s Dosti celebration is presented in partnership with the Brooklyn-based National Youth Organization of Pakistan. It’s the latest event in the Brooklyn Public Library’s World Language Family Series.

Upcoming events include a Spanish-language theater program in Williamsburg for El Dia de los Niños in April. The BPL’s monthly multilingual family programs are sponsored by Apple Bank.

“Nearly half of all Brooklynites speak a language other than English at home,” says Eva Raison, the Brooklyn Public Library’s coordinator of immigrant services.

Last November, the Brooklyn Public Library became the first library system in New York City to offer free interpretation services via telephone. The service is now available in over 100 languages — in all 60 Brooklyn libraries — giving non-English speakers greater access to library books and services for job hunters and small businesses.
