Careful Out There – National Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Warning
Be extra cautious today, folks – the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Brooklyn (and the rest of the city) through 5:15pm today.
The NWS noted that torrential rain from thunderstorms is moving northeast at 30 mph across our region, causing flooding on highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying spots.
Officials are asking you not to drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway – most flood deaths occur in automobiles and flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. The NWS stressed that just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
“When encountering flooded roads, make the smart choice – turn around,” the NWS said.
If you can do so safely, please report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling (800) 226-0217 or emailing OKX.SPOTTERS@NOAA.GOV.
Also, remember if you’re not driving, delays can still occur on the subways and buses, so be sure to check the MTA’s website and Twitter account before heading out.
