Car Slams Into Food Coop Member After Rolling Onto Union Street Sidewalk

A car parked on Union Street rolled onto the sidewalk in front of the Park Slope Food Coop (782 Union Street), injuring a coop member outside of the market.

The Daily News reports that the incident took place Monday, February 21 at approximately 7:40pm.

Witnesses and cops say the victim — describes as a man in his 60s — was pinned against a metal gate after the car struck him. His leg was injured by what is described as a blue, compact car.

Kathleen Keske was working at the coop when the incident took place. She told the Daily News that “[i]t just started rolling backward, and it was on an angle on the sidewalk. It started slowly backing up on the sidewalk. People were yelling ‘Stop, stop!’ But there was no driver.”

Witnesses requested help at the Squad Co. 1 firehouse, which is located just next door to the market. A spokesperson for the FDNY said that the man was treated at nearby New York Methodist Hospital. The man’s identity has not been made available.

According to reports, the man lives in Manhattan and was in the neighborhood to celebrate his birthday.

“He was conscious,” said Kreske, speaking with the Daily News. “He was kind of joking about it, ‘What a way to spend my birthday.”
