Brooklyn Chamber Of Commerce Joins Supporters Of 7th Ave BID

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce announced today that it’s formed a partnership with the 7th Avenue BID Steering Committee in an effort to create a Business Improvement District that would run from St. John’s Place to 16th Street.

Business owners and neighbors got a look at some of the ideas behind the BID at informational meetings earlier this year. Since then, the Steering Committee has prioritized that the potential BID would provide additional street cleaning, beautify and green the area, provide additional security through storefront cameras and volunteer patrols, and organize commercial events to support small businesses.

The proposed BID will not replace services that the city currently provides, but create a steady stream of funds to supplement what’s already being done and advocate for additional resources from the city. All services would be funded by a special assessment paid by property owners within the district. Financial contributions for commercial properties would be based on square footage as well as storefront linear feet, with a minimum yearly payment of $700. Residents would be required to pay only $1 a year, and non-profits or government buildings are exempt.

With help from local elected officials and organizations like the Park Slope Civic Council and the Park Slope Chamber of Commerce, the BID is still a work in progress. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce will lend its staff time, promotion, marketing, volunteers, and technical support.

“The creation of a Business Improvement District along 7th Avenue will go a long way in ensuring that this section of Park Slope remains one of the most vibrant shopping corridors in the borough,” said Carlo A. Scissura, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “Our job will be to bring together local merchants, civic leaders, and residents — making sure business flourishes and that Brooklyn remains a great place to live and shop.”
