BRIC Announces Its Fall 2016 JazzFest Lineup

As summer almost comes to an end, many of you have enjoyed the wonderful musical performances at this year’s BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. Well, prepare yourself for more music and culture this fall as BRIC recently announced its 2016 JazzFest lineup.

From October 8 to 15 at BRIC (647 Fulton St.) Brooklyn’s second annual jazz festival will celebrate some of the most exciting jazz legends along with a group of groundbreaking new jazz artists from the borough and beyond.

JazzFest kicks off Saturday, October 8, with a two-night film marathon, and the rest of the week follows with jazz performances spanning from the BRIC House Ballroom to the Stoop overlooking the Gallery and a jazz club inside the Artist Studio.

Jazz Film Marathon
When: October 8-9, 6:30 p.m.
Where: BRIC Arts Media House
What: The festival kicks-off with a new two-night film marathon featuring an array of classic films that shed light on some of the most influential artists and historical moments in jazz. Some of the films that will be featured are; A Great Day in Harlem (1994), JACO (2015), Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988), Jazz on a Summer’s Day (1959). Each film will be screened once on each day. Celebrated writer, filmmaker, and Brooklynite Nelson George will host the screenings and provide insight into the artists in each film and their place in the pantheon of jazz.

Brooklyn Raga Massive: Raga Jazz Messengers
When: Oct. 11, 7 p.m.
Where: BRIC House Stoop
What: The group features a dynamic lineup of New York City’s finest improvisers, whose music bridges the cultural heritage of South Asia and America. From the American Jazz songbook to Indian Classical Music, their original compositions draw on these melodic, harmonic and rhythmic traditions.

Edmar Castañeda
When: Oct. 12, 7 p.m.
Where: BRIC House Stoop
What: Colombian-born harpist Edmar Castañeda has taken New York and the world stage by storm with his virtuosic command of the harp.

Made In NY BRIC JazzFest Marathon: Night 1
When: Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BRIC Arts Media House
What: Expect a good time with performances by David Murray Infinity Quartet, Ben Allison & Think Free, Taylor McFerrin & Marcus Gilmore, Krystle Warren, Jason Marshall, Inyang Bassey with special guest Binky Griptite, Michael Leonhart Orchestra, Kenyatta Beasley, and Bria Skonberg when they take the stage at BRIC.

BRIC JazzFest Marathon: Night 2
When: Oct.14, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BRIC Arts Media House
What: Performances by Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Septet, Kandace Springs, Big Yuki, Lakecia Benjamin & Soulsquad, Harold López-Nussa Trio, Sofia Rei, Terri Lyne Carrington Band, James Francies’ Kinetic, and Michael Olatuja & Lagos Pepper Soup are expected to make the crowd dance.
How much: $25 advance tickets, $30 at the door (per day) – General admission: standing*

BRIC JazzFest Marathon: Night 3
When: Oct.15, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BRIC Arts Media House
What: The final night of JazzFest will feature performances by Terrace Martin, Julian Lage feat. Scott Colley and Kenny Wollesen, Los Hacheros, Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, Yosvany Terry Quintet, Marc Ribot Trio, Etsuko Tajima, and Liberty Ellman’s Supercell.
How much: $25 advance tickets, $30 at the door (per day) – General admission: standing*
