One of the newest coffee, bagel, and lunch outposts in the area has opened in the former neighborhood favorite Beygl space on 5th Avenue. And while the owner is new, and the menu is different, Brewshot (291 5th Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets) finds the happy medium between starting afresh and capturing Beygl lightning in a bottle.

“It’s a work in progress as we get to know the neighborhood, but we’re very happy to be here,” says owner Arun Nanda, who opened the doors last Thursday. Nanda’s first outpost is located in Jersey City, specializing in organic and fair trade coffees and artisanal teas.

In addition to the coffees and teas, there’s an extensive sweet and savory crepe menu, waffles and pancakes, fresh panini sandwiches, egg dishes, and affogatos — frozen yogurt topped with espresso!

Now onto the bagels — or begyls — which will make many neighbors warm and fuzzy. Nanda hired Steven Silva, formerly the chief begyl-maker at Beygl, to return as Brewshot’s bagel master.

“After Beygl closed, all the equipment was still here,” says Silva. “So I’m making the same bagels on the same equipment.”

While Brewshot should be welcomed to the neighborhood as a promising new shop, locals were not happy to see Beygl go. Some considered it their go-to bagel place. The neighbors who contacted us were disappointed — and at times frustrated — with the closing and lack of information.

In short, the place was at first closed temporarily by the Health Department in early October. The temporary status changed to permanent later that month.

Brewshot purchased and opened the place rather quickly, as we first spotted signs of construction back in January. They already have the neighborhood on the menu.

The place was filled with coffee-drinking and bagel-munching patrons over the weekend.

“We look forward to meeting our neighbors,” says Nanda.
