A busted underground cable knocked out power in several buildings near Nostrand Avenue and Avenue V this afternoon, causing the Kings Bay Y to cancel or move most of their programs.

Two buildings completely lost power and several others were running on reduced voltage, Con Edison said.

There have been several heat advisories this week. A Con Ed spokesperson said the hot weather most likely caused the cable to burn out.

The Kings Bay Y, located at 3495 Nostrand Avenue, lost air conditioning, phone service and had limited lighting, said executive director Leonard Petlakh. Due to worries the high heat and lack of a/c would be a health hazard, the senior program was moved to another location on Emmons Avenue. Kings Bay Y staff are also asking parents to pick up their preschool children early.

“It’s a nightmare,” Petlakh said. “We’re robocalling thousands of people to inform them about the partial loss of power.”

Petlakh said the Kings Bay Y already canceled its Saturday swimming lessons and senior program in case electricity is still out by tomorrow.

A spokesman for Con Edison said the power would most likely be restored by 11pm tonight.
