Edward R. Murrow High School at 1600 Avenue L in Midwood has been under a full lock down since approximately 12:30pm after at least one unauthorized person gained entry to the building, Sheepshead Bites has learned.

[Update (2:49pm): The lock down has been lifted.]

Teachers were ordered to shelter in their classrooms, locking the doors and not letting anybody in or out. Police told Sheepshead Bites that nobody has been harmed, and the lock down was called out of an abundance of caution.

“Everybody’s okay, no one’s hurt or injured,” a police source told us. “We’re waiting for more info – we have multiple units on the scene now. There’s nothing that serious. What we hear from parents and students is there’s a kid from another school who went into Murrow. He’s not deadly armed. Once school gets out at 2:45 we’ll learn more then.”

Dominick Scotto, the community affairs officer for the 70th Precinct, said the school is on a hard lock down but “it’s not serious.” He said there were multiple kids who went into the school, but he hasn’t confirmed that.

Sources inside the school said that the administration has not shared information beyond the lock down orders. Authorities have started a classroom-by-classroom search, checking student identification to ensure all those present are students.

Update (2:57pm): The police have provided updated information, saying now that there were no intruders on the school’s grounds.

“A teacher saw three kids in the stairway with (what she thought were) knives. The teacher sounded the alarm,” said Scotto, from the 70th Precinct. However, “These kids were from the shop class in the school and were going to a different floor with these sharp instruments. No one was in the school who wasn’t supposed to be there.”
