Coney Island Sinkhole Nearly Swallows Car

A parked car was nearly consumed by massive sinkhole in Coney Island this morning.

A broken water main caused the pavement on West 28th Street near Neptune Avenue to cave in, reports News 12. Police managed to pull two parked cars to safety, including one that had begun sliding into the crater.

Water from the broken pipe continues to flood the street and the hole remains open.

West 28th Street between Mermaid Avenue between Neptune Avenue has been taped off by officials. National Grid is on the scene to ensure that there are no gas leaks. The Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] and representatives from Councilman Mark Treyger’s office are also on the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Update [1:39pm] Repairs on the sinkhole are complete and water has been restored to the block, according to Councilman Mark Treyger’s office.

“I would like to commend the NYPD and DEP for their immediate response and quick action to restore service,” said Treyger.
