BREAKING: Bicyclist Struck By Sanitation Truck On Gravesend Neck Road, East 12th Street

Minutes ago, reader Paypaul sent us this photo and tip, saying that a bicyclist was struck by a Department of Sanitation collection truck on Gravesend Neck Road and East 12th Street.

I was walking up Neck Road going towards the Homecrest Library when I saw the aftermath of this accident involving an NYC Dept of Sanitation truck and a cyclist. The rider didn’t look too badly injured but was holding his hands in front of his face. The sanitation workers were responsible enough to be seen and heard contacting emergency responders. They had not arrived at the time I took the attached photographs. I’m not certain in which direction the cyclist was going but the bicycle was underneath the front tires of the sanitation truck.

He added that the accident happened between 11:00 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.

We’re seeing what we can find out about the incident. Drive, walk and cycle safely, folks.

  1. The intersection is at Ave W and East 12th Street, not Neck Road. You can see 1206/1210 Ave W. Since it’s on the left we that means we’re looking South on Ave W and the Garbage truck was turning North from East 12th heading South.

  2. The cyclist was fortunate he only injured his leg. This I got from the investigators on the scene afterwards. Yes, the truck was turning onto Neck Road and cyclists may have been traveling at some speed up Neck Road, against traffic when he slammed into the truck and went sideways and then flew off the bike. An hour later I saw another cyclist go up the same way on Neck Road. That street has always been dangerous. Remember the story of a year or two ago when that van flipped over between E 13th Street and E 14th? It was featured here and my photos also were in that article. Neck Road traffic is almost non-stop. It was even worse when that street was a two thoroughfare. The Sanitation workers were no way at fault here. Thankfully nobody was killed.

  3. Look closer…..the road in front of 1206/1210 Ave W is ACROSS the street from Neck Rd…..the road they are on………….

  4. Today seems to be the day of four wheels vs two wheels. Tonight it was a motorcycle that slowwwly tipped over in front of a small passenger car. No one was hurt at all and the driver was very apologetic to the biker, even offering him some money for any small damages to the bike. He refused and said everything was okay. What was even weirder was that an FDNY ambulance was cruising by just as the accident happened. The biker said he didn’t need a hospital and his bike started up and seemed to be operating normally. The driver of the car was trying to navigate the crazy traffic on that stretch of Coney Island Avenue between Y and Z. Some drivers though go absolutely nuts down that stretch.

  5. I can’t tell you how many times I see garbage trucks early in the morning on my way to the train station while I am driving, making rights on red lights, going down one way streets the wrong way and completely blocking streets by putting their trucks horizontally across a street to pick up garbage. Listen up, you ARE NOT SPECIAL. You are not an emergency vehicle and need to obey the traffic laws like everyone else. I am surprised that more pedestrian’s have not been taken out by these idiots. Where are the “garbage police” when all this is happening?

  6. In NYC the law is you only have wear a helmet if you are under 18. I think you should but my personal opinion dosen’t count.
