B/Q Subway Stations and the 2011 Ridership Report

The Church Avenue B/Q station is no Times Square, but it is the busiest one in our area. Today Gothamist posted 2011 subway ridership information from the MTA, which shows some interesting statistics about stations system-wide, including how ridership changes from weekdays to weekends. So how do the stations along our stretch of the B and Q stack up?

Church Avenue is the busiest, as expected, with over 4.6 million riders in 2011, but that only makes it the 95th busiest station in the system annually, and 12th busiest in Brooklyn. Newkirk Plaza had just under 3 million riders last year, and Cortelyou and Parkside each saw over 2 million. Keep in mind that these numbers may be skewed from a normal year–the Brighton Line rehabilitation project affected a few of these stations, and that construction was only completed in the fall.

Speaking of subway construction, in its list of Capital Budget Priorities and Requests for the city, Community Board 14 asked for funding for the rehabilitation of the stations in the district that were not fixed during the previous project–that’s Parkside, Church, Beverley, and Cortelyou. The city has recommended funding for it, but when it will start, and eventually be completed, is anyone’s guess.
