In preparation for the annual Bike the Branches ride this Saturday (May 20), the Brooklyn Public Library and NYC DOT will be giving away free bike helmets Tuesday afternoon.

Bike the Branches is a yearly spring fundraising campaign to support BPL branches. Individuals and families can register to participate in the day-long ride that travels to all 60 of the library branches throughout the borough.

Between 10am to 5pm, riders visit as many branches as they can and get their Bike the Branches passports stamped at each location. Riders who return to the Central Branch (10 Grand Army Plaza) by 5:30pm with the most stamps collected are eligible to win a Brompton Bicycle.

There will also be a Block Party on Saturday at the Central Branch featuring live music, food, and a beer garden from 3pm to 7pm.

To receive a free helmet, you must be registered for the Bike the Branches ride. Registration is $20 for adults; $10 for children (17 and under); $10 for seniors (65 and up); $40 for families (includes up to 2 adults and 3 children); and $100 for teams (up to 10 people).

The helmet giveaway happens today, May 16, from 3pm to 6:30pm at Central Library Plaza located at 10 Grand Army Plaza.
