City Councilman Joe Borelli, a Republican, will run for public advocate, Bkyner has learned. When this publication reached out to the Staten Island lawmaker to ask about his potential candidacy, he responded, “Get ready.”

There were more than 180 volumes of petitions filed for Councilman Elrich Ulrich last week. But the Queens lawmaker declined to be on the ballot Monday. Ulrich, a Republican, came in second in the 17-person special election for public advocate this February.

Borelli first served as an assemblyman from 2013 to 2015 in the 62 assembly district on Staten Island. In 2015 he won election to replace former Councilman Vincent Ignizio who resigned to become CEO of Catholic Charities on Staten Island.

The term-limited councilman was rumored to run for the office when news first broke that Attorney General Tish James would vacate the seat.

The primary election is on June 25, 2019, followed by a November general election.
