Bite Of The Day: Yam & Pumpkin Tempura, Soy Cheese Wontons And More At The New Ginger Vegetarian House
After we wrote about the deliciousness at Flatbush Avenue’s Zen Vegetarian House last week, a neighbor told us about a relatively new restaurant at 310 Ditmas Avenue (between E. 3rd and E. 4th Streets), Ginger Vegetarian House — and, after recently stuffing ourselves silly, we can confirm: it is more than worth the walk.
About a 15 to 20 minute jaunt from the Newkirk Avenue subway station, Ginger Vegetarian House has a menu that will make vegans and vegetarians happy — as well as meat-eaters who’d like to try something a little different.
It was not easy to make a decision — do we go with $3 spring rolls? Pumpkin soup for $4? A $13 macadamia seitan dish? Maybe Vietnamese noodles soup for $9? — but we finally settled on yam and pumpkin tempura ($5), crispy watercress and soy cheese wontons ($6) and General Tso’s soy protein, which came with broccoli, brown rice and miso soup ($12.50). And…yum.
The portions were definitely generous (we still have some of the General Tso’s left over), the tempura perfectly blended the yam and pumpkin into layers of fried deliciousness, and the crispy watercress and soy cheese wontons were delicately crispy. The huge heap of the General Tso’s soy protein left us in a very welcome food coma that we’d be more than happy to invite into our lives the next time to we make the trek to the restaurant.
While we’d, hands down, get the General Tso’s again, the stars of the incredibly flavorful meal were the appetizers — next time, we’re thinking of going tapas style and ordering a bunch of the amazing starters that they have, such as curry samosas, kimchee, avocado tartar, scallion pancakes, and a whole lot more.
Because we were nursing colds, we took our food to go instead of sitting down in the restaurant — but, with its soft lighting and candles flickering against sizzling platters of tofu teriyaki and soy cutlets, it seems like a relaxing spot to sit down and eat.
