Bite Of The Day: Wheated’s Borough Park

Artisan pizza joint and bar Wheated (907 Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and E 10th Street) has made some menu changes recently in accordance with the seasons, and one of their new developments is the Borough Park pie ($14), topped with Gorgonzola, fresh and aged mozzarella, Peccorino-Romano, arugula, and pineapple slices. If their Caton Park pie went on a Bahamas vacation and got cornrows with multicolored beads in them, it would come back all sunburnt and content to the states like this.

The cheese offers some funk and bite, but is sweetened up by the aforementioned pineapple. Now, pineapple is pretty universally fantastic, but this pie is especially good for those who aren’t so into the ham quotient on a standard Hawaiian pizza.

The mix of fruit, greens, and cheese also has this great adventurous quality–like you’re not totally sure if all this stuff should be on top of one pizza–that I think appeals to me as an adult the way dirt and worms appealed to me as a kid (fine, still does appeal to me).

Like all of Wheated’s pies, this one has a thin sourdough crust and is big enough for at least two. You can hop down to Wheated after 6pm tonight and try it, plus their other new menu items, before the season changes again.
