Bite Of The Day: Lunch At Hungry Ghost At BRIC

Bite Of The Day: Lunch At Hungry Ghost At BRIC

There’s a lot going on at the BRIC Arts Media House at 647 Fulton Street, from video production classes and live studio interviews to art exhibits and live concerts. No surprise: all that expending of creative energy can work up quite the appetite! Fortunately, the on-site cafe, Hungry Ghost, is more than just a museum/gallery food dispensary — it features a menu full of pressed bottled juices, fresh salads, cold and host sandwiches, espresso and drip coffee, sweet and savory pastries, and daily soups.

hungry ghost Chai latte

We recommend starting with a drip coffee ($2.25/$2.75), double ristretto espresso ($2.75), cappuccino ($3.75) or chai latte ($4/$4.50). They, along with the range of iced drinks ($3.25 to $5), are perfect on their own, but you can also add almond or soy milk for an additional 50 cents. Our chai latte came with a lovely little shell design in the foam and was not as overwhelming as chais can often be.

Sandwiches (regular, $6.95-$7.45) range from egg salad or tuna with parsley caper yogurt dressing and tarragon chicken salad, and oven-toasted options ($8.45-$8.95) include roasted mushrooms/smoked mozzarella/spinach to ham/brie/mango chutney/garam masala mustard, and bacon/smoked gouda, roasted tomatoes.

hungry ghost sandwich soup

We recommend getting the sandwich & soup combo, though ($9.75), for the best deal — soups from Hale and Hearty are $5 a la carte. Our roasted mushroom toasted sandwich featured a ciabatta roll half stuffed with savory fillings, all of which were easy to bite through, yet firm and crunchy, and paired well with the cup of hearty, savory chili.

Verdict: We’re curious to try the tarragon chicken salad sandwich and one of the quiches or brownies, so we’re glad that Hungry Ghost is open daily for maximum tasting! The service is also super-friendly and unintrusive. Thumbs up!
