Bite Of The Day: Green Devils From Lola BKLYN
If you haven’t figured it out about us already, you should know we love us some carbohydrates. We agree with Liz Lemon’s theory that all anyone wants to do in this world is eat a sandwich in peace; there’s a good chance much of what you’ll see in future “Bite of the Day” posts will be sandwiches (or pasta). But sometimes, it’s just too darn hot for bread.
Enter Green Devils from Lola BKLYN (387 Myrtle Avenue between Clermont and Vadnerbilt Avenues), which make for a filling, bread-less lunch perfect on days like today. At $6 each or $15 for three, you can get these “avocado boats” stuffed with crab or Caprese salad or meat or veggie chili. We chose one Caprese and one crab.
The Green Devils were fresh and satisfying–avocado halves are the perfect vessels for light summery salads, and they’re awfully healthy, too, unlike all that bread.
While their presentation is pretty–they’re served individually in small bowls atop doilies atop small plates with a long slice of fried plantain–our only complaint is, well, it’s not the most practical. Eating was a little bit of a struggle, as we spent a good deal of the time trying not to drop anything onto the table or push the avocado completely out of its dish.
If your polite dining skills are more evolved than ours, though, we definitely recommend you get down to Lola BKLYN (they’re open 12pm-3am Monday through Friday, and 11am-3am Saturday and Sunday) one of these sweltering days and try some Green Devils and a beer or two for yourself.
