Bite Of The Day: Dessert For Breakfast At Greene Grape Annex
Some say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but that doesn’t mean it has to be the heaviest meal. For example, at Greene Grape Annex (753 Fulton Street), you can indulge a cheesecake tart topped with fresh figs ($6) and a large glass of orange juice ($2) without feeling overly full or at all guilty for essentially eating dessert for breakfast.
The firm crust encases the creamy cheesecake, which is neither overly sweet nor too watery, as some cheesecakes are. The figs add a fresh burst of flavor that lets you think you’re having a healthy bite of the fruit food group, and then the honey-coated nuts add a welcome dose of extra sweetness.
If you’re not into dairy or just want to try something else, there’s also the French Onion Scone — savory, soft, buttery, and a great snack to nibble on throughout the day or to slather with jam or butter — and Hand Pies with various fruit fillings — we went with rhubarb, which was flaky, firm, refreshing, and tasted like a tarter apple.
Paired with a coffee or, in our case, Chai Latte — lightly (not clingy) foamy, smells and tastes of chai. no watered down tea here — it makes for a filling meal that will power you through the whole morning.
Verdict: You can’t go wrong with any baked good at Annex, where everything is freshly made and delicious.
