Bite Of The Day: A Bevy Of Brunch Options At The Dogwood
As we mentioned last week, The Dogwood (1021 Church Avenue between E 10th Street and Stratford Road) is now serving outrageous (in a good way) brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-3pm. The drinks, red velvet chicken and waffles, and eggs benedict with a Southern twist sounded too good not to try as soon as possible, so we headed there over the weekend.
In addition to fresh cups of Counter Culture coffee ($3), we each tried one of the establishment’s “Daytime Libations”–a Champagne Punch (bottom right), Cider Crisp (up top), and Peach Cobbler (bottom left). The Cider Crisp, made with rosemary-infused ginger syrup, cold-pressed apple cider, and sparkling wine, was the unanimous favorite, but the other two certainly had their strong points as well. Each drink is $9, and there are others on the list as well.
Two of us got the Southern Benedict ($13)–country ham, collard greens, and as you’d expect, poached eggs with Hollandaise (but on top of cornbread) which came with Old Bay-seasoned home fries and mixed greens. The eggs were cooked beautifully, the home fries and all greens involved were fabulous, and the ham was pretty salty–but the sauce and sweetness of the dense cornbread helped to even things out.
And then there was the chicken and red velvet waffles–the menu item that stuck out as so delectable-but-also-potentially-weird, we just had to try it. The vibrant hue of the waffle, for some reason, added so much to the experience. The flavor was no letdown either.
“It’s good,” a member of our group said, “but I’m not sure I could eat a whole one.”
“I could,” said another. “I would have no problem with that.”
It should be noted that we also shared a side of cheddar grits ($7), which was great as usual. If you went to The Dogwood for brunch this weekend, what did you have? And if you have yet to go, which menu items are calling to you?
