Bill de Blasio Wants to Help You See the Fireworks

Back in the halcyon days of 1976-2008, outerborough patriots could sip their mojitos and take in the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks from their rooftops like the Americans that they are. And then in 2009, the lights went out: the fireworks, which had been set off over the East River, moved west. Now, Manhattan celebrates the 4th in all its explosive glory over the Hudson, and Brooklyn and Queens are left to wallow in the memories of fireworks past.
Bill de Blasio’s not having it. He, Marty Markowitz, and State Senator Daniel Squadron have started an online petition to bring the show back to the East River and back into the hearts (and views) of Brooklynites and Queensians (?).
Can they make it happen? The the official statement from Bloomberg’s office isn’t ultra-promising, reports Gothamist:
“It’s up to Macy’s. They’re paying for it. And they’ll do whatever they think gets them the greatest visibility. You know, I’ve [sic] love to see move back and forth. I’ve suggested that to them, but in the end, it’s their call. And I’m just thankful that they’re willing to do this. It’s certainly the greatest fireworks display in the United States every year and we’re lucky to have them here. “
Last year, a Macy’s rep told Gothamist that the Hudson is wider than the East River, which means it’s the safer option. For what it’s worth, though, Macy’s did make a 2011 play to hold the show in the New York Harbor — and that proposal was rejected by the city for logistical reasons.
To support the campaign to bring the fireworks home for 2013, sign the petition here. In the meantime, though, how are you celebrating the Fourth this year?
