Big Nick Sells Discount Store To New Owners

Nick Cavalieri, the 17 year owner of Nick’s Discount Store (1669 Bath Avenue), sold the business to new owners at the end of December, according to an article published in the Home Reporter earlier this month.

In another sign of changing demographics in Bath Beach, Cavalieri, known by those in the neighborhood as Big Nick, has reportedly sold his store to a group of Asian partners.

Cavalieri had been making his living on the same stretch of Bath Avenue, between Bay 14th Street and 17th Avenue, for 35 years. He began working at Junior’s Liquor Store (1654 Bath Ave) at age 15, eventually opening his own shop on the same block.

“I love the store, I love being here and I love the people but it’s been a rough couple of years,” Cavalieri explained to Home Reporter. “Lots of my customers moved to Staten Island and New Jersey.”

The store, which sells everything from discounted gifts and home products to deli sandwiches, is expected to keep the same miscellanea of merchandise under its new proprietors.
