Bensonhurst Greenmarket Returns This Sunday With New Farmers & Live Jazz

GrowNYC‘s Greenmarket is returning to Bensonhurst this weekend, and this time shoppers can enjoy live music, while they pick out their produce!

Located inside Milestone Park (18th Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street), the Sunday farmers’ market brings together Bensonhurst’s multiethnic community together to enjoy a relaxing Sunday in the park, play dominoes, catch up with friends, and shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, honey and specialty Mexican herbs.

The greenmarket will be open Sundays, June 5 – November 20, from 9am to 4pm. A short opening ceremony will begin at 10:30am with a live jazz band performing until 1pm. The performance is funded through the Jazz Foundation‘s Gig Fund, which gives retired jazz musicians opportunities to perform in public spaces.

Cash, EBT/Food Stamps, Debit/Credit, WIC Vegetable and Fruit checks, and  FMNP coupons are all accepted. Community activities, cooking demonstrations and recipe exchanges will add to the diverse nature of this market. 

GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets work to preserve local farmland, while ensuring that New Yorkers across all five boroughs have access to fresh, healthy food grown right here in our region. A central component of Greenmarket’s mission and operations is product integrity: Everything sold at market is 100 percent farmer grown, produced, caught, or foraged.

In addition to operating farmers’ markets, Greenmarket works to improve the health of all New Yorkers with a suite of food access strategies aimed at getting the healthiest, freshest food into the hands that need it most. And apparently their efforts have paid off! The Bensonhurst Market won the Slow Foods NYC’s Snail Award for providing increased access to sustainable and high-quality foods in the area twice in two years.

Farmers participating in the greenmarket this year include:

  • Breezy Hill Orchards Pears, apples, cider, and baked goods from Dutchess County, NY
  • El Poblano Vegetables and specialized Mexican herbs and vegetables from one of the last remaining farms in the city of New York, in Richmond County;
  • A New Farmer Development Project Participant Kernan Farms Vegetables from Cumberland County, NJ
  • Knoll Krest Farm Eggs and chicken from Dutchess County, NY
  • Nature’s Way Farm Honey and candles from Chemung County, NY
