Bensonhurst Beat Cop Honored
These days, most cops patrol New York neighborhoods in squad cars but in Bensonhurst, police officer John Ciarcia has been walking a beat along 86th Street. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle is reporting that Ciarcia was issued a plaque by Community Board 11, honoring his service.
Ciarcia was assigned to his beat assignment by commanding officer of the 62 Precinct, James Rooney. His job consists of looking out for trouble, communicating with local business owners and covering a stretch of over 250 stores along 86th Street. The beat cop is almost an antiquated notion, having been phased out of regular rotation in the 1970s, but Rooney said his experiment with Ciarcia has gone well.
“The beat cop is something out of the past, but it worked out phenomenally well,” Rooney told Community Board 11 members at their June 18 meeting. “Store owners have come to like and trust the officer.”
On behalf of Community Board 11, Chairman Bill Guarinello and District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia honored Ciarcia at the Bensonhurst Center for Rehabilitation and Health Care (1740 84th Street). In attendance was Ciarcia’s wife, Denise, and their baby daughter, Faith.
