A beloved Coney Island nursery school is asking supporters to show up for a fundraiser at Wheeler’s next week to help them relocate.

As we reported earlier this year, the future of Warbasse Nursery School, located near West 5th Street and Neptune Avenue, looked bleak after the co-op where the school existed for 46 years abruptly voted not to renew their lease. The school has until August to move out.

Parents, who favored the program for its effectiveness with children with special needs, started a GoFundMe page to raise money to help the school find a new location.

Now the school has found a place on Avenue X, near Haring Street, which previously housed the Beachbrook Nursery School. Erica Kamlet, a teacher at Warbasse, said the transition will be easier since the space was previously occupied by another nursery. However, they still need to raise more funds to make the move.

“We’re finally almost back on our feet, but we need money to cover renovations and moving costs,” she said.

The fundraiser will take place at Wheeler’s Restaurant (1705 Sheepshead Bay Road) on Thursday, June 9, from 7 – 10pm. There’s a $10 suggested donation and drinks are $1 off for supporters during the three-hour event. There will also be a raffle for a new laptop.

Kamlet explained more fundraisers will be held throughout the summer. She said she’s happy Warbasse will keep operating in southern Brooklyn.

“The Warbasse name will live on and continue providing the community with a play-based education and serving special needs and developing children,” she said. “We would love for the community to come out and show their support.”
