Beef, Beer and Betting – Just How The Lord Wanted It

I worry that I give St. Mark programs a little too much exposure compared to other religious programs in the area, and sometimes even think I’m betraying my Jewish brethren by doing so. But, gosh darn it, St. Mark puts on some cool events and they sure know how to reel in this Yid.

This time they’re doing it with a very simple proposition: beer, beef and betting! Every year, the St. Mark Sports Association holds A Nite At The Races as a fundraiser for the basketball program. This year, they’re holding the event in conjunction with the school and all monies raised will be split between the school and the Sports Association.

Attendees pay just $15 for unlimited beer and roast beef sandwiches. Held in the St. Mark School gym on East 18th Street between Avenue Z and Jerome Avenue, tickets also give you the opportunity to place bets on recorded horse races. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food, desserts and beverages, and there is also a cash bar serving mixed drinks, wine and soda.

There are a total of eight races for the evening.  Everyone is given a race program/pencil for the races and are free to bet as much as they want.  The odds for each horse are included in the program.  They rent footage of actual races and the DVD comes sealed so no one knows the winners until the night of our event.

And no, you don’t need to gamble to scarf down as much food as you like. So, being the good mensch I am, I plan to take them up on their offer. Details after the jump.
