Arrest Made in Bed-Stuy Playground Shooting

UPDATE (5/22/18): Earlier this month, 29-year old Johnny Mathis was shot and killed at the Eleanor Roosevelt playground in Bed-Stuy, just half a block from his apartment in the Roosevelt Houses.

Today, the NYPD announced that Herman Dunston, 43, was arrested in connection with the shooting, charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Dunston lived just across the park from Mathis, on Kosciuszko Street.

BED-STUY – A man was shot and killed late last night near the Eleanor Roosevelt Playground on DeKalb Avenue in Bed-Stuy, police have confirmed.

Responding to a call of a man shot around 1:40 am on Friday, May 4, police arrived at 980 DeKalb to find a 29-year old male, unconscious and unresponsive, with a gunshot wound to the head.

EMS transported the victim to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Identification of the victim is pending family notification. So far, there are no arrests, though an investigation into the shooting is underway.
