A member of the local Community Emergency Response Team was at last Wednesday’s 70th Precinct Community Council meeting to invite neighbors to join the FEMA program that helps equip civilians with skills to handle natural disasters, fires, and other hazardous situations. The program teaches basic disaster response skills through in-classroom learning and hands-on exercises so that non-professionals may step in when regular emergency response teams aren’t immediately available.

FEMA encourages “neighborhood watch, community organizations, communities of faith, school staff, workplace employees, scouting organizations and other groups that come together regularly for a common purpose” to participate in the program.
