Bay Improvement Group President Steve Barrison holds up two of the BIG Oscar awards.

They like them. They really like them.

The Bay Improvement Group doled out its unique BIG Oscars award, featuring an Academy Award replica next to a big ol’ fish, during it’s dinner ceremony last Thursday at il Fornetto (2902 Emmons Avenue), honoring local heroes and community contributors.

This year the group recognized two genuine life-savers: Police Officer Thomas Costarella of the 61st Precinct and firefighter Matthew King of the Ladder Company 169. In separate incidents this year, both of them took actions to save a life when called to the scene, according to the group.

BIG also recognized Resurrection Brooklyn Relief, a service-oriented church led by Pastor Brian Steadman that has been at the forefront of local Superstorm Sandy recovery since the water receded.

Varuna Boat Club, which celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, was also honored for their contributions to the community, and their help during BIG events like BayFest.

Similarly, Investors Bank, a sponsor of BayFest, and DARNAA, a performer at the annual event, were also honored.

Organizers announced that Billy Joel’s band will headline BayFest this year, which takes place on Emmons Avenue between Ocean Avenue and East 27th Street on Sunday, May 17.

Congrats to all the honorees!
