Yesterday, New York YIMBY posted new renderings for BAM South (286 Ashland Place) and its surrounding property. The 384-unit building will rise 32 stories, joining the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower as one of the tallest buildings in the area.

20% of the building’s units will be reserved for affordable housing, with 80% going at market rate. YIMBY says there will be 21,928 sq ft of retail, 45,148 sq ft of “cultural space,” and a large outdoor area (some landscaping renderings are already up). One of the renderings mentions the multi-level outdoor plaza, bounded by Ashland as well as Flatbush and Lafayette Avenues) will host temporary cafe-style seating, market tents, a pop-up stage, an area for screening films, and more in addition to its permanent benches. It looks like activities planned for the plaza include shopping, concerts, movies, dance, and yoga.

BAM South, a collaboration between design architects Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos and Ismael Leyva and Two Trees, is scheduled for completion in August 2016. You can see more renderings of the finished property at Grain Collective.

So far, commenters on Brownstoner have shown both excitement over more housing in the area and dismay over such an enormous new development overshadowing two of Brooklyn’s most beloved buildings. What’s your take?
