Baku Bakery To Reopen At New Storefront On Avenue U
More than two months after closing the 86th Street storefront where it operated for 21 years, renowned cake and pastry maker Baku Bakery will reopen at a new location on Avenue U within the next week, the store’s owners says.
The bakery announced on its website that it was back in business. “We couldn’t stay away from making your events extra special and sweet. We have moved to a new location in Brooklyn and are getting ready for a grand re-opening,” read a notice on the site.
Valerie Medensky, who co-owns the store along with Revekka Kvas, said she expects the new store, located at 1903 Avenue U, to be ready for business by Labor Day and customers will receive a 10 percent discount to celebrate the reopening.
Medensky said the bakery will still provide the same custom-made cakes that made it a go-to spot for weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, sweet 16s, and baby showers. The business will also continue to sell its coveted Napoleon, made with homemade custard cream and Stephanie chocolate cake.
“People say we cook the best Napoleon in Brooklyn,” said Medensky. “It’s made from our own home made recipe from Baku in Azerbaijan.”
The new location offers a few new items as well, said the owner, including fresh coffee, croissants, and Churek bread — a traditional flatbread made in Azerbaijan.
Baku Bakery closed shop at 1972 86th Street on July 1 after the building was sold another owner. Property records show the building was purchased in May for $1,476,000. It’s still unclear why the bakery was forced out and we were unable to contact the new property owner for comment.
However, despite operating without a storefront for months, Valerie said her business was still able to fill orders for customers. Some of the purchases, she said, came from as far away as Canada, Boston, and California.
Despite having to relocate from the old location in Bensonhurst, Medensky said she was happy with the storefront in Sheepshead Bay.
“A lot of our customers live in Sheepshead Bay. They are already calling us and making orders for cakes,” she said.
