At First Bite: Brooklyn Belly

At First Bite: Brooklyn Belly

According to Twitter, Brooklyn Belly opened for business this past Sunday, and we thought it would be a great place for lunch today. We ordered the Fish Po Boy sandwich ($7.50; Jouvoui recommended the whiting), which comes on Portugese bread with slaw, and Fried Mac n Cheese ($5) instead of fries to get an idea of a substantial, if carby, vegetarian option.

Although Brooklyn Belly isn’t generally what you’d call light fare, the whiting was fresh and fluffy and the batter was flaky, not thick or greasy like it might have been. The slaw added some good crunch, too.

The Fried Mac was more of a handful. Neighbors wishing for veggie options at Brooklyn Belly might be pleased to know the dense, well-seasoned cubes of noodles could make a meal in themselves–although it’s probably not the worst idea, cardiovascularly speaking, to take them home and split the difference with a salad. Just saying, for folks who don’t eat meat but love pasta, Brooklyn Belly doesn’t skimp.

The restaurant will be closed tomorrow, so if you’re interested in judging for yourself, make sure to stop by tonight! They’re located at 915 Cortelyou Rd. between Coney Island Ave. and E 9th St., and will be open until 11pm. Tell us what you get–or if you’ve been already, what you’ve had so far.
