Astoria Bank Rebrands, Installs Temporary Signage

A signage relic on 5th Avenue is about to change, as Astoria Federal Savings has rebranded itself as Astoria Bank. There’s temporary signage covering the old letters around the building on the corner of 5th Avenue and 10th Street, and an employee at the bank said they’ll replace them with something more permanent soon.

Here’s an image of what those vinyl signs are covering.

As we researched to see how long the bank had been there, we found an interesting classification in the building code that says this space is “designed exclusively for banking,” though looking back in the property records, it’s a little tricky to tell how long it’s been just a bank. There are records of Astoria being located here as far back as 2001, with other banks before that as far as the mid-’90s. But then from the ’70s to the ’90s, it looks like it may have been a Burger King.

Anyone remember some of the different businesses that have been on this corner?
