After more than 17 years in the position, Assemblymember Joan Millman has announced that she will not seek reelection for the next term.

She has served the 52nd Assembly District since 1997, which is an area that covers parts of Park Slope, Gowanus, Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Columbia Waterfront, DUMBO, Fulton Ferry Landing, Prospect Heights, and Vinegar Hill.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle has a clip from the statement:

“It has been my great pleasure to represent our communities in the State Assembly for the past 17 years,” she said in a statement. “The support I have received from my neighbors and constituents has been truly humbling, and the work we have accomplished together will have a lasting impact on our communities. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to serve and I look forward to continuing to advocate on behalf of seniors.”

“Her dedication and love for public service have been the hallmark of her more 30 years in elected office,” wrote Jo Ann Simon, who has served as State Committeewoman and Democratic District Leader of the 52nd District, on Facebook. “Joan has set a high bar for public service. We are fortunate to have a woman of her caliber representing us in Albany and here in Brooklyn.”

“Congratulations, Joan, on years of great public service,” Chris Owens, who has also served as Committeeman and District Leader for the 52nd, wrote on Facebook. “It is an honor to be your friend and it was a pleasure working with you!”

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle notes that she will be taking a position at the New York City Department for the Aging.
