Start stretching, 5th Avenue, as a new yoga studio is opening close to the Barclays Center end of the street this weekend.

The third outpost of Area Yoga hosts its first class tonight, Friday, April 18, at 45 5th Avenue, on the corner of Bergen, in the space previously home to its sister operation, Area Kids. They’re launching with a Kirtan event tonight at 7pm, and then a range of classes starts up tomorrow morning. They’ve also got an opening special , where you can get three months of unlimited yoga (at this location only) for $150 (one month of unlimited is regularly $120, or $60 for new students).

Why the change from a kids clothing and toy shop? Owner Loretta Gendville told us a shift in neighborhood needs led to the decision.

“I felt this portion of the neighborhood with all of the new development could use a yoga studio more than a kids store,” she said. “The demographics to me seem more into taking a yoga class than buying kids items. I was ready for a change and the space is so perfect for yoga.”

Though she saw this as a good time to switch things up, she says she really appreciates all those who’ve stopped by the former shop over the years, and looks forward to seeing them in the new space.

“Thanks for supporting Area Kids at this location for almost a decade!” Loretta said. “We hope everyone will find the change from Area Kids to Area Yoga refreshing and will come join us on the mat! We look forward to offering you the most affordable classes in the neighborhood with super amazing teachers!”
