Gun Toting Pickup Driver Forgets To Blink At Turn, Gets Arrested
A heavily armed driver from Long Island made the mistake of forgetting to flash his blinker in Gravesend Wednesday, bringing him face to face with cops from the 62nd Precinct.
Officers pulled over Jason Whittaker, 27, in his 2008 GMC pickup truck after he failed to signal a turn at Shore Parkway and 26th Avenue at 1:48pm, and found a slew of guns and knives in the vehicle, an NYPD spokesperson said.
When police caught up with Whittaker at Bay 40th Street and Shore Parkway, they noticed a knife in his belt and a rifle on the floor partially covered by a towel, the New York Daily News reports.
Two rifles, two daggers, two gravity knives, and fireworks were recovered in the truck, according to police.
Whittaker, who is from North Babylon, was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon as well as aggravated unlicensed operator, and unlawful possession of fireworks, say authorities.
This arrest is the latest in a series of major gun busts made by the 62nd Precinct since Commanding Officer Captain Anthony Sanseverino took the helm in June of last year. The precinct has been really cleaning up– making 33 gun, drug, and burglary arrests in the last month alone — and they are showing no signs of slowing down. Last week, a 43-year-old woman was arrested for hoarding dozens of guns, live grenades and thousands of rounds of ammunition in her Bath Beach home.
Update [4:25pm]: A search of Whittaker’s Suffolk County home turned up seven more guns, say cops. A photo of the weapons were tweeted out by the 62nd Precinct today.
