After being left almost dead in a pile of trash, this little pup, Phoenix, is making an amazing recovery at Pet Haven Animal Hospital (290 McDonald Avenue, by Caton Avenue), her caretakers wrote on their Facebook page.

“Due to Phoenix’s fragile state, we have had to take baby steps getting her cleaned up and trimmed,” our neighborhood’s animal hospital wrote yesterday. “She was full of dirt , matted hair and dead skin but she couldn’t stand for long periods of time. We were finally able to give her a proper bath and more trimming. She is ADORABLE!”

Phoenix, a 2-year-old Shih Tzu mix, was found on Bergen Street last month, when police found her almost at death’s door and rushed her to Animal Care and Control, the New York Post reported. She then was brought to Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Windsor Terrace.

“When she arrived, she was pretty much lifeless,” Sean Casey told The Post. You could see the whites of her eyes. She just had nothing left in her.”

After blood test results showed Phoenix had a chance of surviving, they pulled out all the stops to save her — and she almost immediately began to turn around.

“I’ve only had one other dog come in that was that bad. I’ve seen dogs that were not nearly as bad as her that didn’t survive this. So the fact that she’s gotten this far is amazing,” Casey told The Post.

Now, she’s doing even better! We can’t wait to see the day when Phoenix is running around with her new family.

And, speaking of her new family, Phoenix’s caretakers are going to be looking for a permanent home for this little fighter, once she’s made a full recovery. If you’d like to bring her into your family, you can contact Pet Haven Animal Hospital at (718) 435-6900 or Sean Casey Animal Rescue at 718-436-5163.
