After Beginning To Rent Last Fall, Half Of The Kestrel’s Apartments Are Leased
After beginning to rent properties in September, The Kestrel, an eight-story rental apartment building at 33 Caton Place (near E. 8th Street), has leased about half of its 126 units, Brownstoner first reported.
Now, in the building that developer Sam Boymelgreen recently sold for $76 million, there are apartments listed on the website that range from $2,372 for a one bedroom abode to $5,312 for a three bedroom, two bathroom spot with two terraces.
The whole Kestrel shebang sounds pretty swanky, with a 24-hour attended lobby, a gym, an on-site garage, a media room, a kids’ playroom, and even a pet spa.
The Kestrel has not drawn rave reviews from area civic leaders or other neighbors, with the former being frustrated at what was essentially a complete communication blackout on the part of Boymelgreen and the latter being irritated by the development’s eyebrow-raising advertising practices – i.e. illegally stenciling logos all over sidewalks in Kensington and Windsor Terrace.
The Kestrel’s emergence is one of a series of large developments happening in the area, including the seven-story, 73-unit 22 Caton Place – a development that has gotten better press than The Kestrel, with Councilman Brad Lander noting during a meeting that representatives from 22 Caton Place routinely update the community about the development.
Additionally, Suzuki Capital and the Gothic Development Group have reportedly teamed up with the Calvary Cathedral of Praise (58 Caton Place) to develop a $126 million project that will include a nine-story residential and retail building in Calvary’s parking lot.
But, back to The Kestrel – we’re super curious to see what people who have actually rented one of these sites think of it – so, if you’re reading this from The Kestrel or you know someone who is, let us know! Comment below or email us at editor@kensingtonbk.com.
